SQUIRRELS ARE CUTE BUT ….

Many, many years ago I purchased a large bird feeder that holds a lot of seed so I wouldn’t have to fill it daily, plus it’s sort of like a platform feeder making it easy for all birds to easily eat the seed. The birds loved it!

I took it with me when I moved to Arizona for eighteen months. The feeder was equally popular with AZ birds as well. However, the low humidity out there caused the wood to split, rendering the feeder unusable.

This Spring I decided to clean the feeder and put it back together using Gorilla Glue. It worked. So I installed it once again and hoped the birds would enjoy having a bigger feeder. Well, they did but then some squirrels found it and decided this was the PERFECT feeder. Now there are 2 gray squirrels and 3 little red squirrels. The “reds” practically live at the feeder. Plus, as the pic shows, they push a lot of seed on the platform part which then falls to the ground.

They managed to chew through the half-inch wood to enlarge one of the holes that allow the seed to flow to the small tray. With the larger hole, they crawl into the large holding bin to eat undisturbed … and possibly to sleep fully protected! A couple times, one of the red squirrels has been inside when I opened the lid to refill it. Loud chatter let me know the squirrel didn’t appreciate being bothered.
